"Operation Med Sweep" planned for September

The Salem Police Department will be participating with other Essex County communities in a medication take-back program on Saturday, September 25. Operation Med Sweep, which is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Essex County District Attorney's Office, will give residents a chance to safely dispose of un-wanted, unused or expired medication. The City hopes that anyone with medication they no longer need, will take advantage of this safe way to dispose of it. By participating in Operation Med Sweep, residents will be making sure their unwanted pills and medication don't end up in a landfill or the City's water supply. They will also be re-moving medication that could be abused, like painkillers, from their homes.

Items that will be accepted by Operation Med Sweep include prescription and over-the-counter medication, medication samples, vitamins, veterinary medications, narcotics and liquid medications.

Items that will not be accepted include syringes, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, hydrogen peroxide, empty containers and inhalers.

This will be the first time a medication take-back program will be conducted by an entire county on the same day.

Operation Med Sweep will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 25 at Salem Police Headquarters, 25 Margin Street.

For more information on Operation Med Sweep, please contact Sergeant Harry Rocheville of the Community Impact Unit at (978) 744-0171 ext. 218 .
